Life in Rome – Museo Nazionale Romano, Palazzo Altemps
For nearly eight years I walked past Palazzo Altemps at least five times a week. I’m not sure why I waited so long to lastly inspect it out.
One Friday, during lunch time, I generally had the location to myself. True, it was the dead of wintertime however I was surprised.
The Palazzo is extremely close to Piazza Navona as well as was developed during the 1500s. Archaeologists have uncovered ancient Roman structures as well as artifacts from the 1st century AD, which are displayed on the very first floor.
Cardinal Marcus Sitticus Altemps obtained the palazzo from the Riario household in 1568. He greatly prolonged the palazzo to showcase the family’s excellent art as well as and book collections. There are likewise lots of standout pieces from the Boncompagni Ludovisi, Mattei, del Drago Albani, as well as Brancaccio collections
This museum is part of the Museo Nazionale Romano which likewise includes the Crypta Balbi, Palazzo Massimo, as well as Terme di Diocleziano.
There is complimentary admission to the museums on the very first Sunday of the month.
Below are a few photos I snapped during my tour:
Palazzo Altemps is opened Tuesday – Sunday from 9.00 to 19.45.
Closed Mondays (except Easter Monday as well as during the “Culture Week”), 1 January, 25 December.
The Ticket office closes one hour before closing time.
